We always stop to take turtles off the road when we see them (so long as it’s safe road-wise). Usually it’s just a matter of taking the turtle to a grassy area beyond the shoulder, in the same direction it was heading.
But this time, when we saw the size of the snapping turtle trying to cross Wolseley Bay Road in French River, we had to rethink our strategy. Thankfully, we had some thick work gloves stashed in the car. But what really helped the most was using the backs of plastic patio chairs as a flat surface with which to drag the turtle away.
Of course, I took pictures of the snapping turtle while Marc did all the hard work — or fun work, depending how you look at it.
