Useful Lists and Tips for Backcountry Campers
Over the past few years, we’ve become more comfortable with our go-to backpacking meal plans and packing lists for backcountry hikers and casual paddlers. At first, we made quite a lot of rookie mistakes! Check out our backpacking meal plans, lists, and tips to avoid making the same ones.
We used to bring way too much stuff on backcountry hiking trips, and too much of our gear wasn’t lightweight. Later on, we realized that we should meal plan according to the different types of trips we take. And even though I had read years ago about how to properly pack a bag, I’d forgotten and had been putting the heaviest stuff on the bottom, which drags all the weight down on the hips and shoulders. I hadn’t really been putting too much thought into accessibility, either, other than what might be needed on the trail.
Those are just a few of the packing challenges we’ve overcome through trial and error over the years, and we’re still working on some things! Since we’re not ultralight backpackers, for example, there’s clearly room for more weight reduction should we feel the need or motivation.
Still, I’ve decided to share our experiences — and our backpacking meal plans and packing lists for hikers and casual paddlers. We had to give it a lot of thought and rework it often before we got them to a point we’re comfortable with, but now that we have, I want to share what we’ve learned, and maybe even get some feedback and new ideas along the way.
